My clients had bought a beautiful barn on top of the downs with far-reaching views. The surrounding gardens had been laid to lawn and paddock and we kept one side of the garden with grass and meadow planting to retain the views and feel of the surrounding countryside. Our client also wanted a 'proper' garden with places to sit out of the wind, with flowers and formal borders so we designed and built another area, contained by yew hedging and tall oak pergolas with wide planting beds and paths. A small summerhouse sits within a courtyard area. We planted the pergolas with roses and clematis which have now grown over the structures, creating a sense of enclosure. Regular maintenance has really worked well for this garden, enabling the planting to retain a blowsy romantic feel.
